Ingredients

12 large pasta shells

1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed (mild or spicy, based on preference)

15 ounces ricotta cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, plus more for topping

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Fresh basil, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Shells: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the pasta shells according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and place on a baking sheet to cool slightly.

Prepare the Filling: In a skillet over medium heat, add the Italian sausage and cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat and remove from heat.

Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage, ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, dried basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.

Stuff the Shells: Using a spoon, stuff each cooked pasta shell generously with the sausage and cheese mixture. Place the stuffed shells seam-side up in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Add Sauce: Pour the marinara sauce evenly over the stuffed shells, covering them well. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese on top.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and slightly golden.

Garnish and Serve: Once out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Serve warm, and enjoy your indulgent meal!
